A globally renowned basketball enthusiast unveiled his NCAA basketball tournament predictions for 2024. Former President Barack Obama exclusively shared his March Madness bracket on "CBS Mornings" Tuesday, elucidating his tradition of making his selections public annually.
In the men's tournament, Obama pegged UConn, Kentucky, Baylor, and Purdue for the final four, envisioning a championship showdown between UConn and Kentucky, with UConn securing victory for the second consecutive year. His women's final four comprises South Carolina, Stanford, USC, and Iowa, foreseeing a final clash between South Carolina and Iowa, with South Carolina emerging triumphant.
Since assuming office in 2009, Obama has routinely disclosed his bracket selections. While presenting the brackets on "CBS Mornings," Vlad Duthiers of CBS News remarked, "He consistently misses the mark every time. He got it right only once, yet he insists it's all part of his grand scheme."
During an episode of the "Ways to Win" podcast, hosted by his brother-in-law Craig Robinson, Obama expounded on his rationale for releasing his brackets. "My perspective is that it brings people joy to outwit me despite the vast resources available to me – the CIA, the NSA, and all that insight. When they surpass me, it brings them satisfaction," he jestingly commented.
Obama accurately predicted North Carolina as the winner of the 2009 NCAA tournament, earning accolades for his basketball acumen. Reflecting on that achievement, he shared on the podcast, "They thought, 'Look at the president of the United States, ranking in the top 4% of all public bracket entries.' I was riding high on that, thinking it would be the norm every year, only to realize I've been off the mark since then. So, my recent picks haven't exactly been winners."
With odds of a perfect bracket standing at 1 in 120 billion, two Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduates endeavored to construct a computer model to defy these odds. Tauhid Zaman, in a conversation with Duthiers, emphasized the significance of selecting underdogs to secure victory, dubbing it the "secret sauce" for success.
